Celtuce is known also as stem lettuce, celery lettuce, and asparagus lettuce.
It looks like a cross between celery and lettuce. 

This type of lettuce is grown for the edible enlarged seed stalk. 
The outer leaves resemble loose leaf lettuce but are a lighter green. 
These leaves may be eaten in salads at a young tender stage..

Celtuce is native to China.
 It is mostly grown in South China.

It is a cool season crop. 
Seeds germinate poorly when temperature is high. 

Except special summer cultivars, most celtuces are sensitive to bolting in hot summer.

Optimum germination temperature is 15/20C !!!

  • Sow indoor under protection , Sept to March or outdoor March to August ( protect from sloughs).
  • To germinate they like cool temperature ( 4 to 16C)  
  • Do not germinate if it warmer than 20C
  • Sow 6 mm deep and 30 apart. 
  • Germinates in 14/18 days
